Marseille Soap (Savon De Marseille)

Did you know that Champagne can only be made using grapes grown in the Champagne region of France? Well,
genuine Savon de Marseille can only be fabricated in the Marseille region. It must also be made using the ancient
and natural processing methods developed in the 1600s.

Lots of products have improved many times since the 17th Century, including soap. However, the utterly pure formula of authentic Savon de Marseille continues to stand the test of time.

How to recognize
an authentic
“Marseille’s soap”

3 manufacturing criteria to respect

N 1

The composition

The raw materials are four in number, at most. No fragrances, colorings, preservatives, animal fats or additives are allowed in traditional Marseille soap.

N 3

The geographical Origin

The place of manufacture is the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, historical cradle of Savon de Marseille, where for centuries, and according to the traditional Marseille process, authentic Savon de Marseille has been produced.

N 2

The manufacturing process

Traditional Marseille soap must be made hot using a saponification process called the “Marseillais process”, which takes place in five very specific stages: mashing, salting out, cooking, washing and liquidation.
